Early in October Jack will mail you a letter to inform you about Halloween coming later that month.

You need to start by finding Jack which can be somewhat difficult as all the villagers wandering outside have the same disguise. However, the villagers will run after you when they see you and Jack will not.

If a villager runs up to you and gets close enough they will speak to you automatically and ask you for candy. If you do not have any candy they will change your shirt into a Mouldy or Patched Shirt, your head into a Pumpkin or an item (including normal tools) in your inventory into a Jack-in-the-Box. If you do have candy but refuse to give it them, they will change the candy into a Jack-in-the-Box. When you do find Jack he will ask you for a piece of candy, if you give it him you will receive a piece of Spooky Furniture. If you have candy and don’t give it to him, he will turn the candy into a Jack-in-the-Box. If you do not have candy he will change your shirt, hat or item of furniture.

If you have spooky furniture in your inventory, this will not be changed by either the villagers or Jack.

Tips
Keep your pockets empty and wear a pattern as a shirt so that it does not matter if a villager 'tricks' you. Keep candy in your letters and only take a piece out, just before you speak to Jack.

Play this festival with a friend over wifi. One of you talk to a villager whilst the other digs holes around them to prevent them from walking around town and running over to you. Continue with this until all the villagers are trapped. Then, split up search areas to lower the time needed to find Jack.
